MELLOW ANNOUNCES GRANT FOR WIND TURBINE AT LACKAWANNA
COLLEGE
HARRISBURG, Nov. 16, 2007 – State Sen. Robert
J. Mellow today announced that Lackawanna College is receiving a $58,279
state grant to purchase and install a wind turbine at its future
environmental institute research facility.
“I am determined to make our region a player in Pennsylvania’s efforts
to become a national leader in the area of alternative energy,” Mellow
said. “This grant is an excellent example of how the state is investing
in the development and study of viable clean alternative energy
methods.”
Mellow said the grant would be used to purchase and install a 10kW Bergy
Wind Turbine at the school’s research facility. The turbine, which
converts wind into electrical energy, will generate 2,600 kW per month
on-site power and also be used for educational purposes. Mellow said the
use of wind power would also potentially reduce the emission of
pollutants.
The grant is being administered by the state Department of Environmental
Protection under the Energy Harvest program, which funds biomass energy,
coal-mine methane reclamation, energy efficiency, and clean energy
generation projects.
In 2004, Mellow supported passage of the Alternative Energy Portfolio
Standards Act, which requires that 18 percent of the electricity
generated in Pennsylvania be derived from renewable sources by 2020.
