MELLOW ANNOUNCES THREE REGIONAL CONSERVATION GRANTS
HARRISBURG, June 12, 2007 - Sen. Robert J.
Mellow today announced a total of over $2 million in state grants for
three conservation projects in Lackawanna and Monroe counties.
“These grants are designed to acquire and develop park, recreation,
conservation and greenway projects,” Mellow said. “I am pleased that
state government is partnering with local governments and environmental
organizations on these projects.”
The three projects are:
$1.5 million for the Wildlands Conservancy to acquire 2,372 acres off
River and Buck River Roads in Thornhust and Buck Townships in Lackawanna
and Luzerne counties. The funds will be used largely to preserve
forestland and watershed protection.
$100,000 for additional development of the Archbald Regional Park to
build roadways, walking paths, play fields, and improve disability
access.
$411,000 to the Barrett, Paradise, Mt. Pocono Regional Open Space
Committee to acquire three properties (167 acres) off Gravel Road and
Route 447 for open space and watershed protection.
Mellow said the inclusion of Growing Greener 2 as a funding source has
enabled the state to invest in additional projects. Mellow supported the
Growing Greener legislation.
The state Department of Conservation and Natural
Resources administers the grant funds. |
